73 senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the rank of deputy inspector general and inspector general have completed an eight-week course in strategic management in the UK this year to hone their policing skills to meet internal security challenges.
From the Andhra Pradesh cadre seven IPS officers participated in the management course. The officials are Harish Kumar Gupta, IGP – Legal; Kumar Vishwajeet, Director, ACB; Mahesh Bhagwat, Joint CP (Special Branch); Dr Shankha Brata Bagchi, DIG – CID; Anil Kumar, DIG – CID; V C Sajjanar, DIG – SIB and N Sanjay, Joint CP (Admin) – Hyderabad.
The course was organised by the University of Cambridge in collaboration with the OP Jindal Global University (JGU), Sonipat, as a part of the ‘Cambridge-Jindal IPS Training Programme’ that has trained nearly 500 senior IPS officers in less than three years.
“The training is aimed at enhancing the professional and leadership skills of our IPS officers by exposing them to the best international practices in the field of policing,” JGU vice-chancellor C Raj Kumar says. This was the fifth batch of this programme. The Ministry of Home Affairs had, in March 2010, awarded the contract for the training of IPS to the Cambridge University in partnership with the JGU.
Kumar said the teaching methodology of the intensive training programme with six weeks in India and two weeks in the UK provided opportunities for deep insights for senior officers to engage with researchers and experts in various fields relating to criminology, criminal justice and policing, including more nuanced aspects of practical policing.
Kumar said during the first six weeks of the training programme at the National Police Academy, Hyderabad, sole focus was on twice-daily lecture-workshop sessions, capped by weekly examinations and assessments. Each participant was required to prepare a “Strategic Leadership Case” presentation for an all-course competition.
The UK leg of the training programme began in the Greater Manchester with an interaction with Deputy Chief Constable, Ian Hopkins of the Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
During the first week in the UK, the officers interacted with senior officers of the GMP while observing the local policing routine and visiting various other divisions. The first week concluded with a discussion on the ‘Anuj Bidve murder case’ by Detective Chief Superintendent Mary Doyle.
The West Yorkshire Police (WYP) hosted the IPS officers for their second week of training during which they saw as many as 14 different major divisions of the WYP. The officers were awarded certificates at a ceremony held at the University of Cambridge.
